After the show, most of the band met fans behind the venue to sign autographs, pose for photos, etc. Then is was off to the afterparty at The Stork Club in Oakland (about 5 blocks away from the Paramount, which was very convenient). The best part is that MONGOLOID performed 2 sets starting at midnight, including one entire set of Hardcore DEVO!

OCTOBER 9th , 2005
SAN DIEGO, CA - HOUSE OF BLUES

DEVO's last show of 2005 - and a great end to a tour that I never thought I'd see happen in my lifetime. San Diego's House Of Blues was packed tight for this show that had to be re-scheduled from early September. A special bonus for me was that my favorite person, JB Popplewell, was there to help out with things before the show. See her wearing a rare "Whip It" shirt, posing with devotee Samantha & her German boy pal.

The only problem was that the show was all-ages initially. Tickets purchased for the September show had "All Ages" printed on them. However, the show was made 21+ for the rescheduled date. Not sure why, but the venue was very strict about this rule, and wouldn't budge for any reason. Not even for Gordon Keller, Jr. - a very devoted young spud who saw DEVO in Anaheim earlier in the tour. He showed up in San Diego wearing a full DEVO radiation suit/dome constume, most of which was hand-made by his mother. After failing to convince the venue to bend the rules a bit,
I approached the band just after soundcheck and asked what we could do for Gordon.

Bob 1 said, "How 'bout we give him 40 bucks?" and pulled a two 20's from his pocket. Then someone else said, "How 'bout we do a couple songs for him right now?" That was my que to run outside to fetch Gordon Jr. Read more about this within the picture descriptions on this page (right column).

Joey Ugalde and Kaitlin Mattick, of the Chula Vista-based band The Atoms, were both too young to see the 21+ show that night, so Mark and I got them in to see the soundcheck. Read an article about their experience in The San Diego Reader.
(see printed version of The Atoms article here)

Just as in Oakland the night before, DEVO's set was energetic & well-received by a packed audience of devotees. Great to see everyone there.

Thanks especially to my good spud-buddies Margaret & Chris from San Diego for making this trip possible for me. Much appreciated - Duty now, Spuds!!!
