The JEM Gallery
has showcased contemporary lowbrow and underground art by emerging and established artists since 2005.

The gallery has a retail shop in the back featuring unique hand-crafted items by local Vancouver and Canadian artists, including jewelery, ceramics, natural skin care products and textile art and other collectibles.

JEM is owned & operated by Carola Goetze, who has long-time connections to the Vancouver punk scene. She was around for early gigs by bands like D.O.A., The Pointed Sticks, the K-Tels, and more. I learned quite a bit about the Canadian punk scene thanks to Carola and her pals.

A pre-party at The Cobalt club on May 3rd featured DJ Low Recombo spinning 80's underground (with a heavy dose of DEVO).
DJ Obsesso provided rare unreleased DEVO from the archives and door prizes to those who attended. Thanks to everyone who showed up!

Limited Edition posters featuring Mark Mothersbaugh's postcard diary art were printed especially for the JEM show, and may still be available for sale. Contact JEM Gallery for more info.

20 of Mothersbaugh's framed Postcard Diary prints were featured in this 2nd Vancouver show for Mark (the first being at Bfly Gallery in 2003 during the HOMEFRONT INVASION! Tour).

Some of Vancouver's finest folks were in attendence:
Nardwuar The Human Serviette (of The Evaporators), Bev Davies (Old-school Punk photographer), Bob Scott (painter and wine-cork artist extraordinaire), Nicole Steen (of The Pop Tarts), and Tony Bardach (of The Pointed Sticks).

Mark Mothersbaugh was with his wife in China picking up his 2nd adopted child, and was unable to attend the reception. However, we are planning a Beautiful Mutants show for Vancouver in 2008, so let's hope he can make it to next year's reception.

Special thanks to Carola and Holly at JEM for such a great show, and everyone I met during my visit for making my stay in Vancouver very enjoyable.

I already miss Vancouver.
